When I moved to DC years ago, I found a job at an association. Like any staff of a small business, I've worn a lot of hats: training, certification, small meeting planning, marketing, strategic planning, executive director, operations management, grant writing, board development, fundraising, contract management, and so much more. I moved on to add a MBA and become a Certified Association Executive (CAE) to help my employers. Since I moved home to Florida to be with family I've moved to consulting.

Associations and non-profit organizations are an amazing way to make meaningful, substantial, and lasting change in an industry or with an issue.

Association and non-profit leaders know their industry, and are passionate about their industry, niche, or mission - as they should be. However, it is also often the case that while these leaders know a lot about their industry, they may not know a lot about running an association or nonprofit.

It's also extremely common for these groups to be run based on passion projects and excitement of previous leaders, rather than best practices and good business. A common misunderstanding is that a non-profit organization can and should choose programs without consideration of cost or return. Discussions of ROI, marketing or business plans, and analytics are often missing. This couldn't be further from the truth - no money, no mission.

I provide objective, business based solutions to complex problems, and facilitate team building. As a rare MBA, CAE I'm equipped to show you how you can excel using business practices and common practice within the association and mission-driven organization field, from where you are and what you have, right now.
